May 13 • Windows in the Heart of God with Diane Spears
This class will look at traditional Russian icons alongside Calvary’s Great Altar Window, and by integrating images from Icons In Transformation, show how very different artistic traditions function to “image” faith.
May 20 • Writing Icons as Spiritual Practice with Robbie McQuiston
Painting an icon using traditional forms and methods goes far beyond mere copying to creating an emotional “space” for practicing the living art of the church. This class will include a short history of icons and their use in worship and meditation and a discussion of the traditional process of making or “writing” an icon. Robbie holds a graduate degree in art history from the University of Memphis and is an accomplished artist in her own right.

“The Challenge of Jesus” is a 16-week DVD series featuring renowned historical Jesus scholar John Dominic Crossan. Crossan’s life’s work has been the development of the unexplored matrix of Jesus’ life through time and place in four primary areas: The World of Jesus, TheLife of Jesus, The Death of Jesus, and The Resurrection of Jesus. Each class will highlight a 15-minute video followed by thought provoking questions and discussion starters. This class is ideal for those who like to engage (and on occasion argue!) with stimulating material. Regardless of your point of view, you will not complete this series without questioning some of your long held assumptions about the Jesus story. Facilitators Fred Piper, Sam White, Allison Parker, Alex Wise, and Peggy Owen will rotate leadership for this fascinating course.

The Small Group Bible Study will continue its investigation of the Book of James. Join in whenever you can for a Bible study that has been conscientiously prepared, not by learned scholars, but by lay people seeking to live their lives more faithfully day by day. Lively conversation and warm fellowship are markers of this new faith formation offering. Class participants choose biblical books to explore, and leadership rotates.
