- The Church in the Late 1st Century/Great Hall
The Rev. Bonnie Malone, Associate Rector
Ever wonder what life was like in the lands of the Bible during the late 1st century? This two-week class focuses on the Church after the apostles and looks at Jewish and Christian texts and some archeology to paint a picture of a day in the life of a 1st century Christian or Jew.
- Raising Christian Kids in a Consumer Culture/Matthew Room
The Rev. Dr. Andrew MacBeth, Rector
The disconnect between our culture’s focus on self-fulfillment and the Christian call to serve God and others is huge! In the midst of this culture, how can parents help their children to ask and answer the questions of vocation and belonging that are so important to Christians? Each week of the course, Rector Andy MacBeth will explore one area of the conflict, offer suggestions, and then turn the topic over to parents for discussion in small groups. Parents with children of any age still in the home are encouraged to attend this class.
- Experiencing Jesus/Emison Room
The Rev. Bonnie Malone and The Rev. George Yandell, Associate Rectors
Dr. Marcus Borg, a renowned Jesus Scholar has identified a need for adult theological re-education. Calvary has responded by offering “Experiencing Jesus,” a faith formation curriculum for adults. The 10-week series is based on Dr. Borg’s bestselling book Jesus: Uncovering the Life, Teachings, and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary. “The study of Jesus is important,” says Borg, “because He ... is for Christians the decisive revelation of God: Jesus reveals what God is like, and what God cares most about.” Using art images, video clips of Dr. Borg, and a highly experiential model of learning, the study invites participants to an emerging way of seeing and experiencing Jesus. Copies of Dr. Borg’s text may be purchased at class sessions.

- The Revelation to John/Great Hall
The Rev. Dr. Mitzi Minor, Memphis Theological Seminary
New Testament Professor Mitzi Minor will examine the ways the church has interpreted the Book of Revelation in its history and the ongoing difficulties understanding it. Then Dr. Minor will introduce ways of interpreting Revelation that are relevant to the church today. Dr. Minor’s presentations are always highly engaging and marvelously informative. The focus of her ministry is the intersection of Holy Scripture and our spiritual lives.

- The Parables of Jesus: Bible Study/Matthew Room
Calvary Clergy
Jesus told stories about ordinary things to explain the extraordinary. This Bible Study led by the Calvary clergy will explore the many parables of Jesus by reading a passage from a gospel and quietly reflecting individually on its meanings. After discussing the passage as a whole, participants will break into small groups for in-depth discussion. The classes will end with the whole group considering how the sayings give direction for our lives.
