Parish Life: Buildings and Grounds

The physical home of Calvary takes up most of the block at the southeast corner of Adams Avenue and Second Street and includes the original sanctuary, adjacent parish hall and education building.

The recent discovery of severe structural problems in the Calvary bell tower tested these claims and required tough decisions about how to pay for repairs. With funding mostly provided by the church endowment, Calvary can stabilize and rebuild its crumbling bell tower without taking funds away from outreach and other ministries that Calvary’s bell has come to symbolize.

Other maintenance will soon require care and attention. A thorough identification of property repair and renovation needs is underway, which will be used to develop a strategic plan for future implementation.

Our most recent large-scale effort to modernize Calvary’s facilities fell victim to the economy. A major capital improvements project aimed at adaptive reuse of our space, with extensive renovation of the kitchen and basement in the parish hall building, was developed under former rector Andy MacBeth, who proposed a master plan to accomplish those goals and expand the building. Although steps were initiated for a $4-million capital campaign, plans were dropped in 2008 when the economy sank.

The Calvary block also includes an income-producing parking lot and two buildings rented free to Calvary sponsored ministries: the Hospitality HUB and a charter school. Green space is limited to a small front garden and flowerbeds in the central courtyard, both maintained by volunteers. Only two privately-held parcels remain outside Calvary’s ownership; obtaining these two properties is part of the building and grounds long-term strategy.
