Parish Profile

We offer this profile of Calvary Episcopal Church, with all of our strengths and challenges, for your prayerful discernment.

Like any profile, it is a snapshot in time, because our church is constantly growing and changing, adding new ministries and leaving others to history. We have been blessed with many new arrivals. But there have been departures too—most notably, two rectors since 2000. That, too, is part of who we are.

During its 180-year history, Calvary has built innovative outreach ministries with lasting impact, because needs are great and because involved and generous parishioners want to serve. It has built strong traditions of glorious worship, because open doors and welcoming hearts bring God’s love to many people.

Calvary has built a commitment to leadership and to maintaining its presence in downtown Memphis, because we are part of this city.

As we turn our attention to finding the next rector of Calvary Episcopal Church, we have learned a lot about who we are and what we need in a rector. We find we need a natural communicator and listener, a powerful preacher, a capable and organized administrator who can preside over our abundance of outreach and other ministries. We seek a rector with the wisdom and experience to see us clearly, and with enthusiasm for leading us into the future.

With the season of Advent fresh in our minds, we look ahead in faith. With God as our guide, we take a joyful step forward in our journey.
